Sports Equipment FAQs
My son is starting football; all the gear seems so expensive! What items should I pay top dollar for and what items can we save some money on?
Always pay top dollar for safety equipment. Your son’s safety should be the most important aspect when equipping him for the sport. Other items like balls and training aids will see a lot of use but because kids are so rough on them it’s best to go mid-range so you aren’t emptying out your bank account.
I just started going to the gym; I am not sure what kind of clothing I should wear. Any suggestions?
If you are going to participate in any group fitness classes then you will want clothing that allows the instructor to see your body (for form) but still gives you plenty of freedom to move. If you will just be spending your times on the machines and with the weights, then look for comfortable, breathable clothing like basketball shorts and sleeveless shirts. The clothing should not be so loose that it will get caught in the machines or get in the way of lifting. Women will need a supportive sports bra for when they are on the cardio machines or while they are in group fitness classes.
I normally buy all my golf and tennis gear from specialty stores, but recently a friend told me I can get better prices at a large sporting goods store- won’t I be sacrificing quality for a lower price?
Not necessarily. Sporting goods stores offer top names just like the specialty stores. Often the prices are lower because these stores have greater purchasing power from the distributor. Specialty stores are good if you are looking for a staff that has a lot of knowledge of that sport; sometimes associates at the large scale stores aren’t familiar with all the ins and outs of each sport. But if you know what you want and don’t need any buying advice then your friend is right, a large sporting goods store can save you money.
