Sports Equipment
When it comes to sports equipment it’s easy to spend excessive amounts of money, but many people cannot afford top of the line equipment in all areas. Safety is one area where no athlete should hold back however. All sports have some risk for injury, some sports can even risk death.
More than ninety percent of eye injuries can be prevented with protective eyewear according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Eyewear is often overlooked but should be considered when selecting sports equipment especially for those who wear glasses or contacts. A strike to the eye when glasses are involved could mean extreme damage to the eye.
In some sports, the safety gear is obvious such as in football and hockey. There are a few activities however where safety sports equipment is not stressed enough. Cyclers, skiers, snowboarders and skateboarders all should wear helmets and all too often this doesn’t happen, resulting in severe head trauma and in some cases death.
Along with helmets athletes should also strongly consider the use of pads and guards when selecting their sports equipment. Mouth guards are also important, not only do they protect the teeth and tongue but they can help prevent concussions. Participants in sports are strongly recommended to fully equip themselves in as much safety gear as possible to ensure the well being of themselves and others.
